Bruce Alton Johnson

Bruce Alton Johnson, 65, passed away on Oct. 20, 2014 at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN.
Bruce was born on May 27, 1949 to Alton L. and Lucia A. Johnson in Olympia, WA. The family moved to Seattle where Bruce and his older sister Nancy had a fun, memorable childhood. Bruces Seattle neighbors became life-long friends. In 1967 he graduated from Nathan Hale High School and earned a BA in English in 1971 from Western Washington State College in Bellingham, WA.
After graduation, he visited his parents who had moved to Stillwater, MN. He liked it there and ended up living in Stillwater, Deer Park and River Falls. Bruce liked working outdoors; he worked and made good friends at Aamodts Orchard, Star Prairie Trout Farm, Behrens Motor Supply, Dwight Nelson Farms and Auto Value.
All would agree that Bruce was an independent man who followed his own path. He was intelligent and extremely well read. He enjoyed good writing and was interested in learning new things. He loved solving a challenging puzzle, the tougher the better. He had an excellent memory and was the go-to guy for help with crosswords or Sudokus. Bruce enjoyed many genres of music and good food. He was a creative cook and was part of a supper club group. It goes without saying that Bruce was a Brewers and a Packers fan. Bruce could be funny and witty but definitely had a thoughtful, serious side and he cared deeply for his family and friends.
Bruce was preceded in death by his dad in 2007 and mom in 2010.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Ken Spitzer of Pullman, WA; aunt Pauline Tindal of Ephrata, WA and cousin Susan Brima, Portland, OR.
A celebration of Bruces life will be held Saturday, Nov. 15 from 1-5 p.m. at Johnnies Bar, 116 N. Main in River Falls, WI. Gifts in Bruces memory may be sent to: River Falls Public Library Foundation, 140 Union St., River Falls, WI 54022.

Violet Hodnett

Loving Mother and Grandmother

Violet Hodnett, age 95, of Oak Park Heights passed away. Our family would like to thank everyone for the well wishes in our time of change. The Lord has blessed Violet by taking her home on November 16, 2014. Four years ago Grandma asked me why she was still here, which indicated to me that she had been ready for a while. Unfortunately, her health declined and she went into assisted living at Afton Care in June of 2013.
Violet Magdalena Herrboldt was the middle child of three, born in Menno, South Dakota in 1919 to farmers, Edward and Magdalena Herrboldt. They were brought up speaking German and had to learn English in that little one room school house. In 1936, the family moved to Stillwater, MN on a new farmstead where she met John Hodnett and went on to marry him in 1945. They had three children, Richard, Daniel and Gale, while moving from place to place until settling on a farm in Grant Township in the 1950s. That would be home until the kids married and moved. In 1974, Violet and John sold the farm and bought a brand new house in Oak Park Heights. It was here, where her six grandchildren got to know our grandparents, their life lessons and wisdoms. She loved to bake and always had homemade cookies for us. To accompany those cookies, you could often be treated with homemade ice cream. She was also our hairstylist for many of the early years. We sat on a stool in her basement in front of the large mirror that hung on the wall. There, we heard many stories from her childhood, growing up during the Great Depression. John passed away in 1984 and Violet lived alone in the house for the next 29 years. She traveled to visit her sons who had moved to Iowa and Idaho. She continued her bountiful garden, canning, cooking and baking. She also loved to sew, rarely would she wear store bought clothes.
Violet is preceded in death by husband, John; son, Richard; parents, Edward and Magdalena; brother, Elmer; and sister, Jean.
She is survived by son, Daniel (Sue) Hodnett of Caldwell, ID; daughter-in-law, Jo Ellen Hodnett of Minneola, IA; daughter, Gale (Ray) Hanson of Houlton, WI; grandchildren, Steven (Brenda) Hodnett, Ray Hanson, Crystal (Myron) Severson, Jennifer (Joe) Trout, Matthew (Brandi) Hodnett, Katie (Jonny) Dalluhn; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other relatives. Rest in peace.
Funeral service Friday, November 21 at 1 p.m. at ST. PETERS UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 111 E. Orleans St., Stillwater. Visitation one hour prior to the service at church. Interment Withrow Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Peters United Church of Christ.

Beverly (MacDonald) Wrobel was born in Millbury, Massachusetts to Grace and Bill MacDonald. Bev was proud of her strong Scottish heritage, of the Hebridean islanders.
Beverly graduated from Massachusetts General Hospital and began her nursing career on the Empire Builder Amtrak (formerly Great Northern) train in the early 1950s that ran (and still does) between Chicago and Seattle. While working, she met Charles (Chuck), who worked as a cook, having just left the Air Force. Beverly and Chuck married in Boston, honeymooned in Chicago, and then moved to Seattle, here Beverly worked as the lead nurse at Victoria Ranch, a home for developmentally delayed young adults. Five years later, Beverly and Chuck moved to Minnesota, a main stop on the Empire Builder route, and remained there for the rest of their lives aside from one more jaunt back to Seattle in the early eighties. Beverly then settled in Bayport, Minnesota. She worked for over 30 years as a registered nurse, and when she retired, enjoyed her life of gardening, dogs, and most of all, her grandchildren.
