Barbara Marineau
Barbarann Othilja (Bergsrud) Martineau, age 72 of Balsam Lake, WI, formerly of Hudson, WI, died May 27, 2014.
Barb was born February 18, 1942 in Spring Grove, MN, the second child of Edwin and Olive (Myhre) Bergsrud. She graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1960 and followed her older brother, Ben, to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Barb did her teaching practicum at Marine on St. Croix in 1964 and in the fall of that same year she accepted a full-time teaching position and would remain with the Stillwater School District for thirty-four years. During her career she taught first grade at Marine on St. Croix (1964-1966), Lily Lake Elementary (1966-1975), and Afton-Lakeland Elementary (1975-1998).
While a student at UWRF, Barb met Dave Martineau and they were married in 1966. The couple lived in Stillwater, MN until they built their home east of Hudson, WI in 1970. That same year, Barb earned her Masters Degree in Education from UWRF and she and Dave welcomed their first child, Denise, in the summer of 1970. Their family was made complete with the arrival of their son, Daniel, in 1975.
Barb enjoyed spending relaxing summers reading while floating in the back yard pool and she and Dave treasured their friendships made in the Hudson co-rec softball league playing for the Mikes Standard team. Barb volunteered at the Phipps Center and was an avid fan of Hudson High School soccer and basketball. In 1986, Barb and Dave found their second dream home on Big Round Lake, WI where Barb did her best to reduce the large mouth bass population every chance she got. She was the captain of her pontoon boat, “Teachers Pet,” and loved nothing more than taking visitors out for a cocktail cruise. Barb and Dave moved to Big Round Lake in 2000 and spent the winters of their retirement traveling in their RV to Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Barb remained an active member of the Stillwater retired teachers group. She was passionate about reading, cooking, gardening, Big Ten basketball, and American Idol. After Daves death in 2010, Barb continued to travel and visited Arizona, New Orleans, Maui, Florida, and a few months ago she rang in the New Year on a beach in Mexico with her family.
Barbs greatest joy was her family, and in particular, spoiling her four grandchildren. She never really retired from teaching, she just reduced her class size.
Throughout her adult life, Barb battled rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma with grace, determination and without complaint. She was hospitalized with an infection on April 30 and spent the following month at Regions Hospital where she underwent numerous surgeries and transfusions before dying of kidney failure on May 27, 2014. Her strength of spirit, graciousness, optimism, and patience were ever present during this difficult month and a gift to her family and caregivers.
Barb is preceded in death by her brother, O.B. “Ben” Bergsrud and her husband, David Martineau. Barb is survived by her daughter, Denise and husband John Schaffhausen and their children Luke and Eira of Champlin, MN; son Dan and wife Lisa and their children Preston and Rylie of Hudson; sisters-in-law Marge Bergsrud of River Falls, WI and Pat Martineau of Woodbury, MN; many nieces and nephews; dear and special friends Alice Yanish, Ann Hansen, and “The Ghetto Girls.”
A celebration of Barbs life will be held on Sunday, June 8 at 2 oclock at the OConnell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, WI. A gathering of family and friends will take place after the service until 4pm, at the funeral home. The family is asking that memorials be given to Afton-Lakeland Elementary School.

Sondra Membrez
Sondra (Sondi) McCune Membrez of Lake Elmo, age 78, died June 24, 2014.
Sondi was preceded in death by adored husband, George Membrez Jr.
She is survived by children, Shelly McCune (Pete Dupuis), Wes McCune (Allie), Dawn McCune, and stepchildren, Greg Membrez (Anna Ferreira), James Membrez (Danica), Michelle Membrez and Georgene Membrez. Sondi cherished her grandchildren, Sina Richert (Jim Warmuth), Alexie Adrian, Josh Gephart, Bri Gephart, Jacob Will, Tristan Membrez, Adrian Membrez, Gregory Membrez, Gus Membrez (Cece), Elise Alonso-Calvillo, Nicholas Alonso-Calvillo, Jonathan Kellogg (Nikki), Christopher Grant (Amanda), Brandon Gray (Laura), along with nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her half siblings, Janice Arnold, Garth MacDonald and Keivar MacDonald.
Sondra Elayne grew up in Luverne, Minnesota as a farm girl with her adopted parents, John and Sina Anderson. She survived polio in 1948, but was haunted by its effects her entire life. She married Bob McCune and moved to Stillwater where she raised her family. In 1980 she and George A. Membrez were married. They lived in Stillwater, MN, Hemet, CA and Prescott, AZ. Sondi returned to Minnesota in the late 1990s and lived near her children in Lake Elmo where she passed away in her home, surrounded by many family members, on June 24, 2014.
Sondi was eccentric by most standards and made many generations of family and friends laugh at her antics. She loved her kids unconditionally and probably loved her cats as much. She enjoyed being in the kitchen and could be found, at midnight when she had insomnia, making a batch of soup to feed an army. Gardening of both flowers and vegetables was a passion and she could barely wait each spring to get her fingernails dirty. With her oxygen hose dragging behind her and with many back surgeries she would still manage to garden in her raised bed in the backyards of her Prescott and Lake Elmo homes. She treasured her family and friends and always had the more the merrier attitude at every holiday dinner. The more people she cooked for the happier she was. Sondi will be missed by all who knew her. She was a cherished mom, G-ma, great grandma, sister and friend.
Thank you to the team at Lakeview Hospice and especially Sondis caring nurse, Bonnie for the many gentle hours she spent with our mom. Sondi was also blessed with wonderful PCAs who gave her unfaltering love and attention during her final years. A special thank you to Shamsa and Martine for your TLC. Sondi requested that her children wear red at her funeral and her family would like to extend this invitation to all who come to share in the celebration of her life. A celebration of Sondras life will be held, Wednesday July 9, 2014 at 11 AM at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., (NW Corner of Hwy 36 and Co. Rd. 5), Stillwater with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
